"The Benefits of Skill-Based Hiring: Building a More Competent Workforce"
The recruitment landscape is evolving, and skill-based hiring has emerged as a game-changer for organizations looking to build highly competent teams. Unlike traditional hiring methods, which often prioritize degrees and years of experience, skill-based hiring focuses on what truly matters: the candidate's ability to perform specific tasks effectively. Let’s delve into the many benefits of this modern approach and how it can revolutionize your workforce.
1. Identifying the Right Talent for the Right Role
Skill-based hiring ensures that candidates are evaluated based on their ability to meet the job's requirements. By focusing on skills over formal qualifications, organizations can:
Find candidates who are genuinely equipped to handle the responsibilities of the role.
Avoid the pitfalls of hiring overqualified or underqualified candidates.
2. Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
One of the most significant advantages of skill-based hiring is its ability to reduce biases. Traditional methods often favor candidates from specific educational backgrounds or those with extensive experience, which can exclude talented individuals from underrepresented groups. Skill-based hiring:
Encourages diversity by emphasizing merit over pedigree.
Provides equal opportunities for candidates from non-traditional backgrounds.
Example: A self-taught programmer without a formal degree may outperform someone with a degree in computer science when skills are the primary focus.
3. Enhancing Workforce Productivity
When employees possess the skills required to excel in their roles, they are more productive and engaged. Skill-based hiring directly impacts organizational performance by:
Reducing the learning curve for new hires.
Ensuring teams are composed of individuals who can contribute immediately.
4. Reducing Turnover Rates
Hiring candidates based on skills rather than assumptions about their qualifications leads to better job satisfaction. Employees are more likely to stay with an organization where they feel their abilities are recognized and utilized. This approach helps:
Minimize mismatches between employees and roles.
Improve retention rates, saving costs on rehiring and retraining.
5. Adapting to Industry Changes
In rapidly evolving industries, outdated qualifications can become irrelevant. Skill-based hiring keeps organizations agile by prioritizing adaptability and continuous learning. It enables companies to:
Quickly respond to market shifts.
Build teams with versatile skills to tackle emerging challenges.
6. Cost-Effective Recruitment
Focusing on skills can save significant recruitment and training costs. Instead of investing in lengthy onboarding processes, organizations can hire candidates who are ready to contribute from day one. Skill-based hiring:
Streamlines the selection process by emphasizing practical assessments.
Reduces the time and expense of prolonged training programs.
7. Encouraging Continuous Learning and Development
Skill-based hiring fosters a culture of learning within the organization. Employees are encouraged to upskill and reskill, knowing their abilities will be rewarded. This leads to:
A more engaged and motivated workforce.
Improved innovation and problem-solving capabilities within teams.
8. Leveraging Technology for Better Hiring Decisions
The skill-based hiring approach is powered by advanced technologies like AI and HRMS tools. These systems:
Provide detailed insights into candidate competencies.
Offer skill assessment tools that simulate real-world tasks, ensuring a better evaluation process.
Platforms like uKnowva HRMS play a pivotal role in streamlining skill-based recruitment by integrating skill tracking, training recommendations, and performance analytics.
9. Bridging Skill Gaps with Precision
Skill-based hiring helps organizations identify specific gaps within their teams and address them effectively. By targeting these deficiencies, businesses can:
Enhance overall team performance.
Prepare for future challenges with a more robust skill set.
10. Building a Future-Ready Workforce
As industries continue to evolve, the ability to adapt and learn new skills becomes increasingly important. Skill-based hiring positions organizations to thrive in the future by:
Creating a workforce that is ready to embrace change.
Ensuring employees remain relevant in a rapidly changing environment.
Conclusion
Skill-based hiring isn’t just a trend—it’s a transformative approach that prioritizes the capabilities and potential of employees. By focusing on skills over traditional credentials, organizations can build a more competent, diverse, and productive workforce. As the workplace continues to evolve, adopting this hiring model is not just beneficial—it’s essential for long-term success.

I've decided that (between fighting Red Robin's bad guys and Moneyspider trying to go rogue on the side), Lonnie and Tim co-mod like... an online server/community help board/coding school for disadvantaged youth to try and get them interested in computer science. (It would be offline also, but Tim's face is hella recognizable and Lonnie is unfortunately still stuck in a coma.)
Lonnie is constantly trying to teach the kids basic hacking stuff and Tim keeps shutting him down (not literally though because that would be hella rude). ...but then Tim is like. Oh no. It would be very unfortunate. If you were to figure out how to pirate movies/TV shows/etc. from these huge corporations who are shitty to their employees. And every once in a while he maybe looks the other way while Lonnie shows the kids how to hack a global megacorporation and redistribute some of the wealth to the masses—look, Bruce, he can run your stupid company or he can babysit Lonnie Machin 24/7, he can't do both, this is on you.
It annoys the heck out of Bruce, because ugh, he is trying to set up some sort of Wayne Foundation scholarship associated with Tim and Lonnie's... whatever it is, but it'll look really bad if WF is associated with what is essentially a hacker school. (He is so proud of them and all the good they do and wants an excuse to brag to the world but also the optics :\ )

god. sometimes i really hate those "10 jobs that you can do WITHOUT a qualification that pay over 100k" and they list something like "human resource management" 130k a year!!! when like. EVERY fucking HR job (and other jobs like this, say like librarian- something that i PAID 17k for and burnt out for in postgrad lmao) strictly DEMAND that candidates must have 1-2 years experience AND an HR DEGREE.
very, very, very, very rarely i see something in HR requiring a TAFE (aussie technical college) certificate (ie MUCH cheaper- 7k) or a diploma in HR. it's almost always a degree, barely EVER "no quals or equivalent experience or similar quals"... even for entry level jobs in hr or most defs management positions.

how are you feeling about all of this (ferrari mess). I'm in a paradoxal state where I'm happy there's no race today, because less disappointment, but also I need a race and a good result of charles, because that dnf still stinks and now of these firing people news and the idea of ferrari being a huge unstable mess right now. I just really would like to see a charles podium at least
Honestly... I have mixed feelings about all of this 🙃
I think there's a lot of contradictory and fear-mongering press coming out that's definitely preying on the post-Bahrain panic fest. I've spoken to an Italian mutual who confirmed that Italian journos know that Charles sells so they tend to put him in on the front page of their newspapers every time something happens in Ferrari, even when there's not actually anything to talk about. We're just going from one extreme to another: first Charles is too passive to be a true leader at Ferrari, and now he's some kind of workplace hitman handing out termination of employment letters left and right. First Vigna's a key figure in ousting Binotto and getting Vasseur in as the replacement, and now those two have major beef and trust issues. After, what, three months? First Vasseur says there will be "marginal changes" to the organisation of the race team, and now it sounds like half the staff is on the way out. You get the idea.
I think the most concerning rumour for me personally is the one about Mekies. It was just recently announced that he will be focusing on "team operations," while Vasseur as team principal will be responsible for drivers, sponsors and the media. He's basically the right-hand man. Just two months ago Jean Alesi was saying that Mekies is going to be the guy Vasseur will be relying on to get him up to speed and take some of that load off of him. Remember what happened last time we had a TP who tried to take on way too many roles all by himself? 🙃 I'm just imagining the Ferrari pitwall shrinking to a Haas size 😭😭😭
The thing is, if they were clearing out all this technical staff (maybe they're choosing to resign of their accord like Sanchez, whichever) to make way for intriguing outside hires—and I mean heavy hitters poached from Mercedes or, even better, Red Bull, then that would be something. As it stands, it seems that Aston is the place to be right now. Plus, most of these engineers and other highly-rated technical staff are Anglophones and/or based in England, so obviously it's less of a bother for them to move to the factory down the road than it is to uproot their families and move to Maranello. It would have to be a seriously enticing offer, they'd have to see some real potential in the Ferrari project to make such a major move. Right now the only real contenders I'm hearing about are ex-Ferrari staff who've been rotated out to Haas and Sauber. So I'm not sure how much of an improvement that's going to be, at least in the short-term.
Then, obviously, all this news about instability and tension and resignations and all of that is just inspiring more negativity and defeatism, and a lot of people are already calling this year a write-off because of all the changes and transitions. I guess all we can do now is wait until some real, actual, confirmed news comes out from reliable sources (i.e. the team) and just see how Ferrari does on the performance side as the season goes on. I mean, it's been one race 😭😭😭😭😭 and with all the drama it feels like we've been in the trenches for literal months already. 🫠
Also ngl it's been really annoying to see the Twitter girlies just sitting there going "well I could do a better job than this guy, hire me instead 😤" and then in the literal next sentence they're admitting they don't even know what the actual position entails. I mean 😭😭😭😭
Agreed, I think a Charles podium, ideally in Saudi, could be a much-needed boost.

Why Skill-Oriented Hiring is the Future's Key
Tumblr media
In the ever-evolving landscape of human resources and recruitment, one trend stands out as a true game-changer: skills-based hiring. At Valiant Business Solutions, we firmly believe that this approach is the future of talent acquisition . It turns out that the issue is not machines taking over all of our employment. Finding people with the necessary abilities to perform the roles that are being created every day is the issue. But there is a workaround. To fill knowledge gaps and enable humans to stay up with the machines, introduce skills-based hiring. In this blog post, we will explore why skills-based hiring is gaining momentum and why it is the key to building a stronger, more effective workforce.
The Traditional Approach vs. Skills-Based Hiring: Traditionally, many recruitment processes have relied heavily on resumes and formal qualifications, such as degrees and certifications. However, these traditional methods often fall short of capturing a candidate's true potential. Skills-based hiring shifts the focus from credentials to capabilities. 1. A Focus on What Matters Most: Skills-based hiring recognizes that what truly matters is a candidate's ability to perform the job. Instead of getting lost in the sea of degrees and buzzwords, employers can zero in on the specific skills and competencies required for success in a role. 2. Reducing Bias and Increasing Diversity: Traditional hiring methods can inadvertently introduce bias into the process. Skills-based hiring relies on objective criteria, making it more inclusive and diverse. It allows individuals with the right skills, regardless of their background, to shine. 3. Adapting to Rapid Technological Changes: In today's fast-paced world, technology is constantly evolving. Skills-based hiring is agile and adaptable, focusing on the skills that are relevant today rather than outdated qualifications. This is crucial in industries where the landscape changes rapidly. 4. Better Alignment with Job Requirements: One of the main benefits of skills-based hiring is the alignment it creates between the skills a candidate possesses and the skills required for the job. This leads to quicker onboarding and reduced skill gaps. Implementing Skills-Based Hiring at Valiant Business Solutions: At Valiant Business Solutions, a leading HR Recruitment firm in Pune, we have embraced skills-based hiring as a core part of our recruitment strategy. Here's how we make it work:
1. Tailored Job Descriptions: We craft job descriptions that focus on the essential skills required for a role. This not only attracts the right candidates but also sets clear expectations from the start. 2. Skills Assessments: We use skills assessments and tests to evaluate candidates objectively. These assessments help us identify the most qualified individuals for our clients. 3. Continuous Learning and Development: We believe in investing in our employees' growth. Skills-based hiring is not a one-time event; it's an ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and helping our team members acquire new skills as they become relevant.
Skills-based hiring isn't just a trend; it's a transformation of the recruitment process that aligns with the dynamic needs of the modern workforce. At Valiant Business Solutions, we're committed to helping our clients unlock the full potential of skills-based hiring. Join us in embracing this future-oriented approach, and let's build stronger, more skillful teams together.
If you're interested in exploring skills-based hiring for your organization or need assistance in implementing this approach, reach out to Valiant Business Solutions HR Recruitment Company. We're here to help you navigate the future of talent acquisition.

Skill-based Hiring for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Workplaces have evolved to adapt to the year 2020 and its aftermath. Via "work from home" or real-time virtual collaborations, enterprises have reenvisioned what a modern office space and recruitment process must include. Simultaneously, the rising trend toward skill-based hiring has increased the significance of continuing professional development. This post describes how these aspects help implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

─ 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘷. (𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺) 🍑
⤷ summary: austria. mclaren pr department can't read the room so shit officially hits the fan. at least y/n is getting paid for her troubles. lando thinks he can think his way out of this one 🤣
━━━━━━ ༻✩₊⋆☾⋆⁺✧༺ ━━━━━━
"You want us to what?" Y/n asked incredulously.
There is no way. No. Fucking. Way.
"I know this may seem out of the blue, or even slightly unorthodox, however-" Michael started. Thirty-nine years old, head of the McLaren PR Department, her boss, and he thought this was only 'slightly' unorthodox. Right.
"I think we're a little past slightly, don't you think?" Lando muttered from the chair next to her. He wasn't looking at her directly anymore.
She had successfully ignored 127 messages, 53 phone calls, 3 emails, and a handful of indirect messages from Oscar, and he still didn't seem to get the hint. She shot him down once again when he tried to approach her before their meeting, after she had purposefully shown up as soon to the start time as possible to avoid him. Maybe that had been the final straw and he had understood she had no intention of speaking to him.
Lando's eyes met hers and Y/n swallowed down the guilt at his kicked puppy dog look. He was very good at looking pathetic, and she was starting to become skilled at ignoring it.
Not skilled enough.
"I'm well aware this is putting you both in a very precarious position, especially you Y/n considering your career," Michael continued, "but since you two have begun to interact on social media our numbers have nearly tripled. We've increased our social following across all platforms, we've increased engagement, Christ, we've even increased our merch sales. But if you two dated, a real, PR contract-based relationship, the results would be more than we could have hoped for at the start of the project."
"That was the point of hiring me," Y/n said sitting up. Yes, she was annoyed, but at this point who could blame her, "I knew my strategy of personalizing ourselves to the internet would work. I told you guys this would happen, and if we keep to it we could probably still reach these numbers you're looking for. What you're suggesting doesn't seem a bit far to you? A bit too risky?"
"Honestly, Y/n, the fact of the matter is this: we could increase what you've already started. If we go through with this project, we could see a skyrocket in our social media. This could do wonders for the team, especially given the results this season. No offense, Lando."
The Brit seemed to be dragged out of his thoughts at the comment and he simply shrugged and waved his hands impassively. Y/n intentionally ignored his disregard for the situation, because jumping across her seat and choking him would not solve any of her current problems- even if she really, really wanted to choke him.
"Do you understand what this can do to my career? This would look so unprofessional for me. The point of a PR relationship is that it doesn't really seem like a fake relationship. It would seriously decrease my options if or when I leave McLaren if it seems like I date my coworkers. You're basically condemning me to a life where I would never be hired again. I won't do it. I can't do this." Y/n said shakily, before standing up. It felt like she couldn't breathe, and it's not like she could turn to Lando for comfort in this because they weren't even friends. Not that he seemed all that bothered anyway. Lando seemed perfectly comfortable staring into space like the airhead he was.
Zak, who had been standing calmly in the corner of the room leaned toward her and squeezer her shoulder comfortingly. She had no doubt he knew how uncomfortable this situation must be for her. Unfortunately for her, he just didn't seem to care. Or at least not enough.
Michael sighed and stood up as well, walking around the desk he was sitting at so he was directly in front of her and Lando and sit on the desk itself.
"I hear your concerns Y/n, I really do, but you cannot truly expect that we wouldn't have some safety measures in place for your protection, can you? When I said this would be a contractual relationship, I meant it. There would be physical evidence that you were not violating any workplace policies, and were instead participating in a project that involved the relationship you would be a part of. We would provide any future employers with proof of this, given that they are willing to sign an NDA. You would not be left at risk in your future endeavors," Michael explained sympathetically. Y/n couldn't help but feel the insincerity of his words in comparison to his face.
They understood they were putting her in an uncomfortable position. They understood they were endangering her career no matter how many contracts she signed. And yet here they were, asking anyways.
"And if I just don't want to?" She asked and she heard Zak sigh from behind her. He took his hand off her shoulder.
Oh.
"Then I'm afraid we've reached a standstill here, haven't we?" Michael said. She inhaled sharply and looked down.
Oh. They were going to fire her. Of course.
"Are you serious?" Y/n finally turned to look at Lando. At some point in between when she had last looked at him and since she had begun to have her job dangled in front of her face he had stood up. He looked angry, not that he hadn't looked some variation of hurt, angry, and sad since he arrived.
"You can't seriously be threatening to fire her, right in front of me, over a project that no one in their right mind would agree to without any incentive. You do realize you haven't really offered her anything that would make her agree don't you? Do you do this to all of your employees or just the ones who carry nearly an entire department on their back?" Lando spit out angrily. He wasn't yelling, but he had sure as hell left the station of speaking calmly a while ago.
"Lando," Zak started through grit teeth, but Michael held up a hand.
"You're right Lando, I'm sorry, let me-"
"Why are you apologizing to me? I'm not the one whose job you were just threatening."
"You're right," Michael cleared his throat and returned back to his chair, "I'm sorry Y/n. Truly. I don't think we've approached the topic correctly at all. Let me start over. There is, of course, some incentive for you."
Y/n sighed, and looked over at Lando. Like usual, he was already looking at her. He was letting her take the reigns of the situation, he was letting her be in charge.
Because he respects you, a small part of her brain whispered and she closed her eyes and breathed in. She wasn't thinking about that anymore. She couldn't think about him anymore.
She sat down and stared at Michael. He could continue, but that didn't mean she would agree. Lando sat down as well, glaring at Zak over his shoulder until the older man walked away from behind Y/n's chair and back to the inconspicuous corner he had been in when they started.
"We had some extra money allotted in the budget," Michael started uncomfortably, pushing his glasses up his nose. His voice was wavering and uncertain, making his British accent even thicker. Y/n seemed to have an affinity for upsetting British men this week. Call it American reparations or whatever, but she was finding the prospect quite enjoyable.
"There would be a salary increase for you, should you choose to participate in the project." Michael stated, as he shifted some papers around on the desk. He uncapped a pen and wrote down a number on a piece of company branded legal pad paper. He folded the paper and slid it across the desk. Y/n, who had begun rubbing her temples irritatedly, closed her eyes as she sighed through her nose before reaching a hand out to look. Lando's hand slid in front of hers and grasped the paper before she could.
Her eyes widened in surprise and she looked at him incredulously as he unfolded the paper Michael had passed.
"Lando," Michael began and Lando cut the man off with a scoff. He crumpled the paper and tossed it in the trash.
"You're asking the girl to put her career on the line and that's the amount that you offer?" Lando scoffed. Michael continued to try to speak but Lando held his hand up.
"Let's break this down properly before we make anymore stupid offers," Lando said, voice dripping the arrogance that typically bothered Y/n the most.
"You're asking her to stick out her neck for a PR project that may not work the way you're hoping, you'll be expecting her to keep performing her current work functions while also appearing at additional McLaren events as my partner. On top of all of that, you'll probably also want us to be making public appearances on days and times where she wouldn't be working at all anyway," Y/n thought briefly that this might be the most serious she had ever heard him sound.
"You also can't expect anyone to believe any of this if she doesn't also behave like we're dating in public, and expecting physical affection with someone she isn't actually dating is a lot to ask of someone who isn't a robot, if you weren't already aware," Lando stated patronizingly.
"And that's not even acknowledging the multiple hostile workplace environment policies you've broken in this meeting alone. I really hope you're not expecting her to sign a contract right now without a lawyer on top of that, considering that's illegal." Lando finished, staring at Michael with more anger she had ever seen him show.
"So maybe we should try a much bigger number," Lando said, leaning forward in his chair, "might I recommend doubling it?"
Why was he doing this. She hadn't even heard him out since their argument, ignoring any attempts at conversation, and now he was fighting tooth and nail in a room where no one else was defending her. Including the CEO of the company, who quite literally held his job in his hands.
Maybe that's just his charm. That he never thinks things through. That he doesn't think at all, whether it hurts someone else or himself in the process or not. It's just in his nature to fight first and ask questions later. She couldn't decide whether that was something she could handle or not.
Michael cleared his throat and wrote a number down quickly, handing it to Lando this time instead of her. Lando looked at the number and turned to look at her, nodding and handing the paper over.
Y/n fumbled with the paper slightly before opening it and exhaling sharply through her nose. Right in front of her eyes was a one, a five, and 5 whopping zeroes.
One and a half million dollars. Lando had just gotten her one and a half million dollars.
"This," Y/n started with a shaking voice, before clearing it with a harsh swallow. This was more money than she had ever seen before in her life.
"This is what you're offering me instead of my current salary?" She asked uncertainly. She was getting a headache from the tension of the furrow of her brows.
"No of course not," Lando started, never looking away from Michael.
"This is a bonus they're offering in addition to your current salary, right?" He narrowed his eyes at Michael. Michael nodded aggressively.
"Yes of course. This would be a bonus for participating in the project. You would be receiving your current salary as well for the work you were already participating in," Michael assured and his shoulders slumped in relief when Lando looked away to finally look at her.
"You don't have to make any decisions now," Lando began gently, eyes visibly softening, but Y/n could hardly hear him.
Half a million dollars would be more than enough to pay off her student loans. One and a half million dollars was more money than she even knew what to do with.
"I'll do it," She agreed.
One and a half million dollars, she reassured herself as Lando smiled at her softly. She smiled back. She was only doing this for the money; the one and a half million dollars.
Lando ignored the fluttering in his stomach as she smiled at him for the first time all day. He cheered internally. Who cared about money, this would be perfect. He would make sure to be perfect.
Lando would be the best fake boyfriend she could ever ask for, starting now.

Training for Two
Chapter 1. Interview
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Masterlist
SUMMARY: After Riley's injury on a mission, she can no longer be a part of the task force. Simon reluctantly starts looking for a dog-sitter to watch her while he's away for work, and that's when you show up on his doorstep.
Warnings: none
Tumblr media
Simon Riley would have laughed if anyone had suggested that he needed a dog-sitter.
Riley, his eighty-pound German Shepherd and only family (outside of the 141, of course), went with him everywhere. Grocery store? There she was, K-9 vest on to avoid getting the stink eye from trouble-stirring strangers. Missions? She was there, working alongside Simon, and when she couldn't join, she was safe and tucked away on the animal unit back on base. At the small, one-story unit he called home? You'd better believe she's sitting on the couch next to him as he watches the telly, trying not to succumb to his daily nap. He never considered having a dog-walker care for her, since there was hardly a second where she wasn't walking right there with him.
But of course, as expected - life threw him a curveball.
The mission had gone well so far; everyone was booking it to exfil, hardly worrying about the few enemies left who could barely manage to fire their guns. Simon and Riley were sprinting to the heli, Simon already imagining how he was going to take a fat nap when he got back to base, when he heard it - amidst the sparce gunshots, Riley's pained yelp.
Simon had never shot someone so fast, but before he knew it, there was a bullet planted between the enemy soldier's eyes. Simon rushed to scoop Riley into his arms as she whined and howled - he loaded her onto the helicopter with Soap's help, hands shaking as he looked for the damage. Her right hind leg was bleeding, and every time he tried to look at it, she snapped her teeth in his direction with a shrill yap.
Simon couldn't hear Price as he promised to get her into surgery ASAP. He didn't register Gaz wrapping gauze around her leg as he carried her off the heli and into the medbay. He couldn't hear Johnny trying to comfort him as they stood in the hall, waiting for her to come out of the operating room so Simon could finally see her again. The only thing he could comprehend was her cries, her blood, and the fact that he was responsible for all this.
It wasn't a lethal injury, he knew that. But he assumed, and the vet later confirmed that she wouldn't be fit to continue working. And that terrified him. He had to continue working - what would happen to her? He wouldn't put her up for adoption, in fact, he'd nearly bit the head off the poor soldier who had suggested the idea. She'd be coming home with him, once she had fully healed, but then what? How would he take care of her when he had to go on missions?
He couldn't. Much to his chagrin, and as much as he hated the thought of her being under anyone else's responsibility, he was forced to hire a pet-sitter. He begrudgingly posted ads online, and even put his request up at the local doggie-daycare, despite having never sent Riley there. It didn't take long after bringing Riley home before people began to answer his ad, and he plucked a good handful of them to interview over the weekend.
So, there he was - sitting in the breakfast nook with Riley at his feet, silently judging each interviewee that had walked into his home. He was quite disappointed in the selection.
Simon had already decided 'no' to nearly every dog sitter that had answered his ad. He sat across from them as they described their skills and achievements, bored out of his mind as they treated the interview like it was a college application. He didn't want an egotistical, decorated twat caring for his dog... if Riley didn't care about this bloke being voted 'dog-walker of the month' by the doggie daycare, why should he?
He knew it came down to much more than that - but he was going by Riley's reaction, too. And so far, she was uninterested in all seven that he had interviewed thay day. She sat by Simon's feet, bum leg out and eyes zoning out on the stranger's shoes as they droned on. No one had actually paid much attention to her, instead focusing on impressing Simon.
He hated to admit it, but a boarding house for dogs might be the best option.
He had just scratched the second to last name off of his list of interviewees, pouring himself a cup of coffee at 4 pm, when a knock rapped at his door. He sighed, looking down at Riley; she was laying on her side, huffing at the fact that the random visits from random people was still going on.
"One more, eh?" Simon said, reaching down to ruffle her ears. She groaned through her nostrils in annoyance as he straightened out and walked towards the door.
He reluctantly opened it to find you standing there.
You, with nothing but your phone and keys, wearing a t shirt, oversized plaid, leggings, and sneakers. No folder full of resumes and reviews, no bone-shaped doggie bag holders... the only other thing you had was an apologetic look on your face.
"Hi." You said warily.
"Evenin'." Simon responded, leaning against the door.
You sighed. "I should let you know- well, aren't I being rude..." You rolled your eyes at yourself and stuck your hand out at him. You stated your name with a sheepish smile.
He stared at your hand for a second, before shaking it with his own. "Simon."
The way your eyes lingered on his hand after he had gripped it so firmly didn't go unnoticed by him - but you quickly regained focus. "Well - before you waste your time on me, I should explain: I didn't read the posting correctly, and I thought this was a house-sitting gig. Only just noticed when I checked the address before I left... figured I'd still stop by since I told you I would."
You were looking at the ground out of embarrassment at this point. Simon's brow furrowed as he observed you. House-sitting isn't horrendously different from pet-sitting... he thought. "Well-"
"But I love dogs!" You quickly interjected. "Had three of them growing up, two bullies and a golden! Loves of my life, they are- never a day I didn't walk them. Well, besides that one week for Becca's wedding- and when my Nan had that nasty virus and I had to check up... on her..."
Simon's raised brow must have made you realize the tangent you had embarked on, because you snapped your mouth shut. You cleared your throat nervously and shifted on your feet.
Simon was the tiniest bit entertained. "And how's your Nan now?" He asked.
"Oh, much better." You said with a smile. "'Course, that was four years ago... she- she's alive, I mean! God, that sounded morbid, didn't it?"
Simon huffed out a laugh, before he stepped to the side and nodded his head towards the inside. "C'mon in - you came out this way, might as well chat. Could maybe use a house-sitter, too."
You muttered a quick 'thanks' and stepped inside, immediately taking note of how pristine and bare the home was. No decorations, only dark grey furniture with darker accents... the closest thing to decor was probably the mauve throw blanket over the back of the sofa.
"You like cleaning?" You speculated, following Simon into the kitchen.
"Not home enough to get it dirty." He replied nonchalantly, seating himself at the breakfast nook. He took a sip from his mug as he shoved a hand in his sweatshirt pocket. "Coffee?"
"Oh, no thanks." You shook your head politely. "Not now, anyways. I'll be up all-"
You cut your reasoning short when you spotted Riley, sitting still by Simon's feet. "Oh, hello!" You chirped, lowering yourself down to your knees and reaching your knuckles towards her, palm-up. "You must be Riley!"
She hesitated, then sniffed your knuckles, huffed, sniffed again, and thumped her tail slowly. She tilted her head back and looked at Simon with a questioning glance.
He chuckled, rubbing between her ears. He watched as you fished a small baggie from your pocket, taking out one of the lumpy, golden balls from the contents. You held it up for Simon to see.
"Peanut butter bacon cookie." You said, and Riley sniffed the air between her and the treat. "No sugars, no preservatives. Picked some up from the daycare on the way here."
Simon nodded once. "You can give-"
Before he could finish, Riley flawlessly snatched the cookie from between your fingers, downing it in a few bites. She licked her lips and stared at you as you laughed.
"Where are your manners?!" You said, poking her side. She followed your finger with her nose, searching for another treat.
You looked back at Simon. "I hope that was alright."
Simon shrugged, though he silently scolded Riley for accepting something from a stranger so quickly. "She'll survive."
Tumblr media
Over the next hour - which was twice as long as he had entertained anyone that day - Simon listened to you ramble about your qualifications. Except, you didn't mention reviews, awards, or self achievements. You talked about your family dogs (the two pitbulls, Rowena and Charlemagne, and the golden retriever, Donald). You described the time you took care of your neighbor's schnauzer and home when she had to make a last minute trip to Berlin for two weeks. You talked about the best trails for dogs based on the texture of the ground and the environment (the younger dogs liked Swan's trail more, due to the thicker, woody area; older ones seemed to like Ellington park, where it was more of a suburban area with smoother paths). You rattled on about how that damn husky in the apartment across from you is always yelling, and how you really should invest in some noise-cancelling headphones.
Simon listened to every word you said. You seemed to know more than just how to walk a dog - it was almost as if you knew their language. You didn't just live with them, you cared about their personalities and preferences. He had a subconscious appreciation for how you regarded them - despite trying to keep up the act thay he was unhappy about needing a dog-sitter, he liked you.
And clearly, so did Riley. She was laying at Simon's feet, completely relaxed, eyes flitting between you and your hand movements as you spoke. You would occasionally look down to her, as if you were letting her know that she was also a part of the conversation, and she would lift her head ever so slightly and stare back - like she was listening.
"- and she decided that the day before my biochemistry exam, she was going to take her frustration out on my notes! Papers everywhere, even my sticky notes were torn up! You'd think she had a personal vendetta against me, wouldn't you?" You looked down at Riley for affirmation, and she looked back at you and slapped her tail against the floor a few times.
Simon chuckled, then sighed. "Well- I think you're more than qualified for this, and I think she likes you." He nudged Riley with his foot, who looked at him and huffed.
Your eyes widened. "Does that mean I got the job?"
He nodded. "Don't know when I'll be deployed next, but it should be soon. I'll send you an email with Riley's routine, and if you want to make some extra cash, I'll include some things you can do around the house."
"Oh, that's wonderful!" You exclaimed. You leaned down to Riley, who reached her head out and sniffed the air between your faces. "Ya hear that girl? You're stuck with me!"
Simon chuckled and stood up, followed by you and Riley. "You can expect to hear from me by Tuesday. I'll give you the spare key the morning I head out."
You followed him out of the kitchen and towards the front door. Riley pushed past you to stay close to Simon's side.
"That's fine. My schedule's flexible, I don't do much besides babysit. Also, let me know her preferences, like where she likes to walk, treats, toys, things like that."
Simon opened the door for you and you stepped outside, turning to face him on the landing. "Also - glad you didn't go with Mitchell. Bloke's a fraud."
Simon's brow raised as he leaned against the door. "S'cuse me?"
"Daniel Mitchell. Saw him on your piece of paper there." You replied, making Simon look down at the crumpled list of interviewees in his hand. "He was NOT dog-walker of the month - in fact, he was turned away when he applied to work at the daycare. He treated the dogs like they were cats, for gods sake! Said they don't actually need to be walked n' you can just let them in the backyard for a few minutes. He's out of his head!"
You sighed, tugging your keys out of your flannel pocket. "Anyways, I should get going. I'll look out for your email!" You turned and departed down the walkway, not sparing Simon a second glance as you left him in the doorway. "See you soon!"
He watched you climb into your small car, returning the wave you gave him before you pulled out of his driveway and disappeared down the street. Simon felt an odd stillness in his home - you had came and went like a storm, and the only evidence that you were ever here was the small baggie of peanut butter and bacon cookies on the kitchen table. He sighed, closing his front door and looking down at Riley.
"She's either gonna be the best, or the worst." He said, running a hand down his face.
Riley let out a groan, which turned into a high-pitched growl. She shifted her weight back and forth on each foot anxiously.
He raised an eyebrow. "Want t' go see Johnny?" He asked. She barked at the familiar name, running to where her leash hung in the closet.
He supposed it was about time. He hadn't seen his team since she was sent home. He knew she was probably aching to see someone other than him right now, and he was honestly going a little stir crazy himself, after spending so much time in the normal, civilian world.
He moved next to her, grabbing the leash and snapping it to her collar. She immediately ran back to the door and waited for him to open it, and he laughed.
"A'right, a'right... but no tackling Price this time. Nearly took out a few of his teeth last time, ya ninny."
